Stay Watchful: Living Like Jesus Could Come Back Today

Hey sis ✨ let’s talk real for a minute. Have you ever had company pop up at your house unannounced? Like one minute you’re chilling in your bonnet, Netflix on pause, dishes in the sink… then boom 🚪 somebody knocking. And you’re like, “Whew, I wasn’t ready for this!”
That same caught off guard feeling? That’s exactly what the Bible warns us about when it comes to Jesus’ return. And here’s the truth — the Word tells us we must prepare for Jesus because we don’t know the day or the hour.
A lot of people wonder how to be ready for Jesus’ return — is it about being perfect? About following a bunch of rules? Nah sis, it’s about living daily with your lamp full, your heart ready, and your spirit awake. And recently, I lived this lesson in a way that hit me deep.

🌹 My Grandma’s Story
My grandma had stage 4 lung cancer. She was moved to hospice, but she was still talking, walking, and smiling. Honestly? I thought I had more time. I told myself I’d visit her after work on September 9. But early that morning, around 4:50 am, she passed away.
Here’s the crazy part: that same morning, I couldn’t sleep. Out of nowhere, I decided to work out — totally unusual for me at that time. Then I felt the Holy Spirit nudging me to open my Bible. So I did. I flipped straight to Matthew 24:36:
“But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.”
I kept reading all the way through Matthew 25:13 — the parable of the ten virgins. Twenty minutes later, my grandma was gone.
Sis, I’ll be honest… I thought I had more time. I wasn’t expecting her to leave so soon. But God used that moment to remind me: we never really know the day or the hour. Not for Jesus’ return. Not even for our loved ones. That’s why we have to stay watchful.

📖 What Jesus Taught Us
In Matthew 25, Jesus tells the story of ten virgins waiting for the bridegroom. Five were wise – they had oil in their lamps, ready to meet Him. The other five? Foolish. They thought they had time, but when the bridegroom came, they missed their moment because they didn’t prepare for Jesus.
In fact, this isn’t just a story from the Bible – it’s real life too. Surveys show that many people today admit they might not be ready if Jesus came back. For example, one study found that about 41% of Americans expect Christ’s return by 2050 (Source: CBS News), but far fewer actually live like they’re prepared for Him. That means a lot of people are thinking about when Jesus might come, instead of focusing on being ready right now.
The parable of the ten virgins is really about living with expectancy, even when it feels like Jesus is taking His time. Back in those days, wedding parties often stretched out for a whole week, so delays weren’t unusual. The bridesmaids (or young maidens) carried oil lamps and had the honor of leading the way for the groom when he finally arrived.
Think about it like this: at modern weddings, you sometimes hear the music or see the bridal party before you even see the bride or groom. The noise and movement are the signal –“It’s time!” That’s the picture Jesus is giving us. The signs of the times – wars, plagues, disasters – aren’t the main event, but the announcements that the Groom is on His way.
A traditional wedding in that culture had three stages:
- The engagement (betrothal): This is like when we first give our lives to Christ — we’re set apart and promised to Him.
- The preparation: Our everyday life now is the waiting season, where we’re called to stay faithful, grow deeper, and keep watch.
- The celebration: One day the waiting ends — either when Jesus returns or when He calls us home — and that’s when the feast begins.
All ten virgins had lamps, but lamps alone weren’t enough. The oil is what kept them burning. The lamp represents our lives and God’s Word guiding our steps, but the oil points to the Holy Spirit. Without Him, we run on empty. With Him, our faith stays alive, our passion for Christ burns bright, and we’re able to truly shine in a dark world.
That’s why the wise virgins stayed ready. They didn’t just start strong – they stayed filled. The foolish ones, on the other hand, let their fire die down. And the truth is, we’re all waiting for the Bridegroom. The question is: are we keeping our lamps filled while we wait?
And then Jesus says:
“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.” (Matthew 25:13) (Read the full parable in Matthew 25 on Bible Gateway.)
This verse isn’t just a warning — it’s a Christian encouragement to stay watchful. It reminds us that our faith walk isn’t about procrastination or waiting until “later.” We don’t know when later will come. That’s why this scripture became more than just words for me — it became a reality.

🔎 What Does “Stay Watchful” Even Mean?
Let’s keep it simple, sis. Staying watchful isn’t about living scared or paranoid. It’s about being spiritually ready. Living like today could be the day Jesus says, “Come on home.” That’s why it’s so important to prepare for Jesus now, not later.
Here’s what that looks like in everyday life:
- ✅ Guard your heart – Don’t let bitterness, jealousy, or toxic relationships pull you away from God’s peace.
- ✅ Stay prayed up – Prayer isn’t just for Sundays. Talk to God daily like He’s your bestie. If you’re not sure where to start, I actually wrote a whole article breaking down how to pray step-by-step in a way that feels real and personal. Check it out here ➡️ How to Pray (and Actually Feel Connected to God)
- ✅ Check yourself – Repent, forgive, and keep your heart clean. Don’t let sin pile up.
- ✅ Shine your light – Live in a way that shows God’s love through you.
At the end of the day, it’s not about being perfect — it’s about living prepared for Christ. Every small step of faith keeps your lamp full and your spirit watchful.

🌱 Why It Matters
The truth is… we all think we have “more time.” More time to change, more time to pray, more time to see loved ones, more time to get closer to God. But sis, the reality is — none of us know.
My grandma’s passing taught me that lesson in the most personal way. But instead of sitting in regret, I’m taking it as God’s loving warning: Stay ready. Keep watch.
Because when you’re ready, you’re not fearful — you’re excited. You’re living every day with peace and purpose, knowing you’ll be prepared when He calls.

💕 Final Word
Think of your faith like keeping your phone charged. You wouldn’t leave the house with 3% battery and no charger, right? Don’t let your spirit run on E either. Keep your lamp filled, stay watchful, and prepare for Jesus daily in prayer, faith, and obedience.
Sis, I want us BOTH to be at that wedding feast — dressed, ready, and glowing, like “Yup, we made it!” 👑✨ Let’s keep encouraging each other to stay ready and prepare for Jesus with joy, not fear.
